Vitor PamplonaandClaude Opus 5 f434e98b00 fix(nip29): scope group subscriptions per channel so Messages updates live
The Messages list showed a stale last message for every NIP-29 group while the
open chat screen stayed live. The joined-group tail batched every group on a
host relay into ONE filter carrying all their ids in `#h`. That is valid NIP-01
and relays answer it correctly for stored queries — which is what made it so
confusing: the boot backfill populated every group, so the list looked right
until it needed to change.

`block/buzz` indexes each live subscription under a single channel uuid resolved
from `#h`. When two or more distinct ids appear anywhere across a subscription's
filters, `extract_channel_id_from_filters` returns None and the subscription is
registered as *global* — and global subscriptions deliberately never receive
channel-scoped events, guarding against leaking private channel content to a
subscriber whose membership was not checked per channel. So the batched tail
backfilled at EOSE and then went permanently deaf.

Measured on device: same relay, same connection, same subscription id, only the
`#h` count changed — one value delivered live, two delivered nothing.

The resolver scans every filter of a subscription, so splitting into one filter
per group is not enough; each channel needs its own subscription. The EOSE
managers are therefore keyed on GroupId, and the preloads mount one subscription
per joined channel. Relays leave room for this: buzz allows max_subscriptions
1024 against max_filters 10, so this also sidesteps the filter cap for anyone in
more than ten groups.

Also folded into the same per-channel subscriptions:

- Group activity addressed to me (reactions/zaps/replies) moved off the
  account-wide notifications subscription. That one also carries inbox filters
  with no `#h` at all, and buzz forces a subscription global on the first
  channel-less filter, so no reshaping there could ever have worked.
- Reactions and deletions (kinds 5/7/9005) now ride the channel's own `#h`
  subscription, the shape Buzz's own client uses (`channelEventKinds`). Amethyst
  otherwise learned about them only through the shared `#e` EventFinder query,
  which carries no `#h` and is therefore global — so reaction chips appeared
  only on a re-query, never as they happened. Kept out of the timeline kind set
  so reactions cannot consume a history page's limit and walk the `until` cursor
  past undelivered messages.
- A `limit = 1` preview filter with no time floor. The tail floors at now-7d to
  keep recent chat warm; on its own that stranded any channel quiet for longer
  on a "No messages yet" placeholder sorted to the bottom by createdAt 0. Every
  other roster-driven protocol on that screen already bounds by count for this
  reason (NIP-28 `limit = 1`, Concord `limit = 10`) — their row set comes from a
  list event, unlike NIP-17/NIP-04 whose rooms are discovered from the messages
  and so need the backward pagers.

The Messages row now says "Loading" instead of "No messages yet" until the fleet
settles, so an in-flight channel is not mistaken for an empty one. That required
the shared WindowLoadTracker to describe the whole joined fleet rather than
whichever channel rebuilt last.

Verifying the APK signature

If you sideload Amethyst (Obtainium, GitHub Releases, Zap Store), verify that your APK is signed by the official release key before installing. All official Amethyst APKs — both the googleplay and fdroid flavors — are signed with the same certificate, whose SHA-256 fingerprint is:

To check a downloaded APK yourself, run (apksigner ships with the Android SDK build-tools):

Privacy and Information Permanence

Relays know your IP address, your name, your location (guessed from IP), your pub key, all your contacts, and other relays, and can read every action you do (post, like, boost, quote, report, etc) except for Private Zaps and Private DMs. While the content of direct messages (DMs) is only visible to you and your DM counterparty, everyone can see when you and your counterparty DM each other.

If you want to improve your privacy, consider utilizing a service that masks your IP address (e.g. a VPN or Tor) from trackers online.

The relay also learns which public keys you are requesting, meaning your public key will be tied to your IP address.

Information shared on Nostr can be re-broadcasted to other servers and should be assumed permanent for privacy purposes. There is no way to guarantee the deletion of any content once posted.

Development Overview

This repository is split between Amethyst, Quartz, Commons, and DesktopApp:

  • Amethyst - Native Android app with Kotlin and Jetpack Compose
  • Quartz - Nostr-commons KMP library for protocol classes shared across platforms
  • Commons - Kotlin Multiplatform module with shared UI components (icons, robohash, blurhash, composables)
  • DesktopApp - Compose Multiplatform Desktop application reusing commons and quartz

The app architecture consists of the UI, which uses the usual State/ViewModel/Composition, the service layer that connects with Nostr relays, and the model/repository layer, which keeps all Nostr objects in memory, in a full OO graph.

The repository layer stores Nostr Events as Notes and Users separately. Those classes use LiveData and Flow objects to allow the UI and other parts of the app to subscribe to each Note/User and receive updates when they happen. They are also responsible for updating viewModels when needed. As the user scrolls through Events, the Datasource classes are updated to receive more information about those particular Events.

Most of the UI is reactive to changes in the repository classes. The service layer assembles Nostr filters for each need of the app, receives the data from the Relay, and sends it to the repository. Connection with relays is never closed during the use of the app. The UI receives a notification that objects have been updated. Instances of User and Notes are mutable directly. There will never be two Notes with the same ID or two User instances with the same pubkey.

Lastly, the user's account information (private key/pub key) is stored in the Android KeyStore for security.

Setup

Make sure to have the following pre-requisites installed:

Deploying

A release is one tag push. Bump app and appCode in gradle/libs.versions.toml, then git tag -s vX.Y.Z && git push --tags — the Create Release Assets workflow builds and signs every Android, desktop, CLI, and Maven artifact, and Homebrew + Winget auto-bump on stable tags.

Snapshots (JitPack)

Tagged releases go to Maven Central. For pre-release / snapshot builds — e.g. to test an unreleased fix straight from main or a feature branch — use JitPack, which builds the module on demand from any git ref:

Create signers that can be Internal, when you have the private key or a read-only public key, or External, when it is controlled by Amber in NIP-55.

Create a single NostrClient for the entire application and control which relays it will access by registering subscriptions and sending events. The pool will automatically change based on filters + outbox events.

You will need a coroutine scope to process events and if you are using OKHttp, we offer a basic wrapper to create the socket connections themselves.

The client will add the relay to the pool, connect to it and start receiving events. The metadataSub will be active until you call metadataSub.close(). If the client disconnects and reconnects, the sub will be active again.

To manage subscriptions that change over time, the simplest approach is to build mutable subscriptions with a filters lambda that you can change at will.

In that way, you can simply call metadataSub.updateFilter() when you need to update subscriptions to all relays. Or call metadataSub.close() to stop the sub without deleting it.

When your app goes to the background, you can use NostrClient's connect and disconnect methods to stop all communication to relays. Add the connect to your onResume and disconnect to onPause methods.
